Chateau Sigalas Rabaud 2006 (Bordeaux, France)

Chateau Sigalas Rabaud is an interesting Chateau, situated on just one single plot of 14 hectares, making it the smallest of the first growths, and only some 500 metres away from its illustrious neighbour, Chateau d’Yquem.

Here’s to another bank holiday Friday and to the happy couple…lets all raise a glass of England’s finest!

Dinastia Vivanco Reserva 2004 (Rioja, Spain)

It’s going to be a hot Easter, full of cloudless blue skies and the smell of barbecued lamb fat. Bliss. I recommend a butterflied leg rubbed with the holy trinity of garlic, rosemary and thyme and chucked on the coals until the outside chars and the inside is a juicy pink. It’s not the weather for roast tatties and mint sauce, but some punchy tzatziki and some flatbreads will go down a treat.

Chateau Haut Batailley 2010 (Bordeaux, France)

Hmmm… a wine of the week that hasn’t even been bottled, isn’t on sale yet and won’t be seen in the UK for at least another two years. Such is the peculiarity and ridiculousness of the en primeur system….

Grover Vineyards La Reserve Cabernet/Shiraz 2006 (Karnataka, India)

Twenty-two blokes played a game of cricket on Wednesday – and an estimated 1.2 billion people watched them on TV. That’s more than a sixth of the world’s population, and more than a quarter more people again than watched the 2010 football World Cup Final. Extraordinary stuff…

Bastianich Vigne Orsone Friulano 2009 (Friuli, Italy)

Spring is in the air. Lunchtime walks up Primrose Hill no longer require hat, gloves and scarf. Henry Harris of Racine has been tweeting about jersey royals, mint and butter. There is blossom on the cherry tree outside my house. Cheek-glowing reds from the Rhone are giving way to fresh-as-a-daisy whites from northern Italy.

Bodegas Tomas Cusine Vilosell 2008 (Costers del Segre, Spain)

You really should never buy wine on the strength of the label. Books and covers and all that. Having said that, we all have our favourites; bottles that look fantastic on the dinner table, labels that always catch our eye…

Stellenrust 45 Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2009, (Stellenbosch, South Africa)

Produced from one of South Africa’s largest Fairtrade certified single wine estates, the 45 isn’t any ordinary Chenin Blanc, with some interesting touches in the winery creating a very rich, creamy wine, with pronounced fruit and character…a wine rightly at the top of the Stellenrust pile.

Te Awa Left Field Merlot/Malbec 2009 (Hawkes Bay, New Zealand)

I have a free weekend sans famille coming up that may or may not involve some of the following: a St John Bread & Wine bacon sarnie, half a dozen Colchester natives and a pint of Oyster Stout at Bentley’s, a plate of jamon and a glass of sherry at Dehesa and a fat ribeye steak from Darragh O’Shea. Happy days…

Knappstein Handpicked Riesling 2010 (Clare Valley, Australia) for Wine Relief

Wine Relief is a good thing. Set up by Jancis Robinson and her husband Nick Lander 1999 to support the larger Comic Relief charity it gives us all the opportunity to support a very good cause whilst drinking wines…
