Art & architecture at Ceretto

Il Cubo

Over recent years, the wine-art connection has been so exploited that it has become over-inflated: countless literary tastings, concerts and banquets organized in the name of Bacchus. In this confused chorus of ostensible links, the Ceretto family has demonstrated that it has its very own voice by promoting original projects and innovative ideas. Convinced that enological research and the pleasure of a good bottle of wine are above-all a question of culture, Bruno and Marcello have been the driving force behind ventures benefiting architecture, music, and art in general, like the ‘patrons’ of days gone by.

These are never impromptu ventures: the natural setting for each idea is to be found amidst the vines, wine cellars and farm festivals in the hills of Piedmont. This is the case of the Premio Langhe Ceretto, the book prize introduced in 1991 for which a jury made up of a group of international experts and academics has the task of highlighting works published during the year dealing with themes linked to food and wine culture.

One of the most impressive projects is “The Cube”. Located on the top of the Bricco Rocche hill in Castiglione Falletto, this project was tied in with an extension to the winery and the existing production facilities. The Cube is a modern, hi-tech work of art designed as a pledge guaranteeing tradition and the preservation of a masterpiece of nature: Barolo. The cube’s sharp edges and solid base were designed to represent Barolo’s youthful sharpness along with its robust structure and great endurance. The use of glass without a frame ensures that nothing gets in the way of the all-round view of the surrounding landscape enjoyed from the Bricco Rocche winery, which lies at the geographical heart of the Barolo growing area. The design focused on creating a form of fully-transparent landscape architecture presented as a sculpture, a unique work of art in an inimitable setting: a monument to Barolo wine.

The Ceretto Cube was realized in association with the architects Luca and Marina Deabate of Turin.
