Bisol Prosecco Dinner at the Tufnell Park Tavern

As one who likes to go and try out new food and wine haunts in London Town I was always slightly disappointed that a certain area of area of North London was void of a certain quality of gastropub. As it happens this place is Holloway and it’s where I currently reside. An especially and notably dry area of my beloved N7 is Tufnell Park Road, the road which links the exit of Tufnell Park Tube Station all the way down to the Odeon on Holloway Road.

That all changed about 2 months ago when the Tufnell Park Tavern swung open its doors right at the heart of Tufnell Park Road. With a huge deli, ample bar space (including larger than average beer garden) and a restaurant area they’ve really pulled out all the stops. Having dropped in a few times and already found the place bustling with happy punters, I had noticed an advert for their first ever wine and food matching evening and only thought it right that I pop down to see what was going on – especially as it featured one of my favourite wineries.

A balmy and overcast Tuesday evening in late July had managed to pull in over 50 guests all looking forward to matching their three course meal with a range of Bisol’s Prosecco presented by Roberto Cremonese (pictured above) from the winery. As the guests settled in we were served the refreshing Jeio Brut NV whilst nibbling on some still warm crostini’s with goat cheese and toasted walnuts before we delved into some prawns with warm spiced lentils, matched perfectly with the pear and apple notes provided by the Bisol Crede.

As Roberto discussed the virtues of Prosecco as an everyday drink and another option to the ever increasing prices of Champagne we all listening attentively to his rolling Italian accent and tucked into roast breast of guinea fowl wrapped in prosciutto which was paired with the Jeio Rose NV creating the surprise match of the night. The Merlot/Pinot Noir blend sparkler than can be taken very seriously with food! To finish we enjoyed a glass of the slightly sweet single vineyard Cartizze with some Rose Pannacotta and Fresh Strawberries. All in all, it was well worth the £30 that covered the entire evening.

This evening did prove that Prosecco and sparkling wines can be matched with far greater range of foods than I had previously envisaged. Though whether or not it levitates Prosecco to the status of the ‘new Champagne’ remains to be seen but certainly this suburban North London crowd seemed more than happy to make that switch. As for myself, I was left with a wide smile in the knowledge I now have a fantastic new option when I want to go to the local pub.
